The documentary exhibition Rouget de Lisle & La Marseillaise in the galleries of the Cour d’Honneur of the Hôtel des Invalides from 25 July 2016 to 7 October 2016 was organised by the musée de l’Armée as part of the commemoration of the 180th anniversary of the death of Rouget de Lisle who died in 1836. This exhibition is part of the cultural, scientific and educational season dedicated to La Marseillaise, organised by the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of National Education.
The exhibition layout displays twenty-two panels around the galleries of the Cour d’Honneur and describes the history of the song, from its creation during the declaration of the War against Austria in 1792 to present day.
The exhibition is focused on two major themes : the representation of La Marseillaise and Rouget de Lisle through different historical periods and their use during the Great War. The military career and personality of Rouget de Lisle, military music and revolutionary songs along with orchestrations and reinterpretation of La Marseillaise, particularly during WWII, are covered in this exhibition, as well as the national homage to the victims of the terrorist attacks of 13 November 2015.
To create this exhibition the musée de l’Armée selected a series of documents and objects from its permanent collections. Several partner institutions have also contributed to this exhibition by gathering the necessary documents from their respective collections : the Institute of Communication and Audiovisual Production of the Ministry of Defence (Établissement de communication et de production audiovisuelle de la Défense–Ecpad), the Defence Historical Service (Service historique de la Défense-Sga/Dmpa/Shd), the Library of international contemporary documentation (Bibliothèque de documentation internationale contemporaine of the University of Paris Ouest Nanterre La Défense-Bdic), the Archives, Documentation and Heritage Department of Choisy-Le-Roi (Service archives documentation patrimoine de Choisy-Le-Roi), the Rouget de Lisle Museum of Lons-le-Saunier and the Documentation and Photographic Libraries of the Museums of Strasbourg.
